Watchmen is very mysterious, complex, demented, and Dark. The Comedian’s death begins the book and makes everything seem sad and sorrowful. And from that point in the book everything seems dark. A very large theme in this book is darkness. I think this theme relates to almost every part of the book whether it’s the story, plot, setting, or characters.
Darkness is also a very large symbol in general. To me it symbolizes things like night, sadness, death, and Evil. And so if this is the theme in the book it’s as if there is a constant flow of all these things everywhere. Having darkness in a little bit of everything makes it seem as if everything has a little bit of evil.
A lot of the characters are very dark. Some of them have very dark thoughts and opinions and some have dark appearances in the illustrations. For example the Comedian is one of the super heroes but he has this very mean and barbaric way of living. Rorschach is also a good guy. When batman and superman fight crime they just leave the robbers for the cops, but Rorschach kills the bad guys in gruesome ways, so there is a dark side to him also.
Watchmen is very dark. It is portrayed as a very sad, and evil story. The colors of the artwork have a very large affect on the book.
